If you’re a design student or graduate who:
- Finds it difficult to get job interviews,
- Wants to find a job that doesn’t just pay the bills, but is enjoyable and rewarding,
- Wants to move up in the workplace,
- Struggles with speaking in front of a group at school or at work, or
- Wants to freelance or start your own design company…
You’re in the right place!
Design Draw Speak is a resource for design students and graduates who want to get noticed, land their dream job and kick butt in their professional careers through becoming confident, creative communicators.
Having been in the workforce, I’ve seen that being a good designer is NOT ENOUGH if you want to be successful in the professional world. It doesn’t matter if you want to work for a company, start your own or do freelancing; learning to communicate well is critical to your success.
Why is this?
You can have incredible ideas and design and technical skills, but if you can’t communicate well, work with a team or explain your ideas, other people will find it difficult to work with you. And as a designer, you spend a LOT of time working with people. After all, they’re the ones who are paying you!
I was speaking with experienced communication skills coach Diane DiResta, and she told me that when in school, your success depends on your level of SKILL. However, in the workplace:
CONFIDENCE trumps COMPETENCE. That’s why if…you see someone who you know has less skill than you and they get promoted, I’ll bet you anything they have the confidence and ability to sell themselves.
Read that again. Yes, it’s that important.
So if you’re still studying, learning how to communicate and be confident NOW will place you way ahead of the pack when it comes to getting employed once you graduate. And if you’re currently searching for work, there are plenty of tips and strategies that you can quickly implement to help you on your way to finding your dream job!

I love helping people get confident to share their message with the world and live their passion! I also like holding signs.
I started DesignDrawSpeak.com to provide a resource I wish I had when I was a student. During my architecture degree, very little advice was given to my peers and I on communication skills and how important they are when job hunting and thriving in the workplace.
Speaking to current design students, it seems that not much has changed. So that’s why I’m here to help!
When I’m not podcasting or doing speaking gigs you’ll find me training for my next fun run, cycling to my favourite coffee spots, pushing myself through a punishing CrossFit workout, or blogging about my life adventures on my personal blog.
