Nick Gray is the energetic and straight-talking founder of Museum Hack, a New York-based company that runs renegade tours of museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History. Their aim? Make museums fun for people who don’t like museums! I love it!

I took one of their tours at the Met, and was so impressed I just had to reach out to Nick (via video, of course! Scroll down to watch)

In this episode we’re chatting about how to get a job at a small company. Nick started Museum Hack just over a year ago, and now has around 12 employees. As the owner of a young, fun and innovative company, he receives a LOT of requests from people looking for jobs. I was keen to pick his brain about what it would take to get HIS attention and stand out from the hoards of other job seekers.

  • How to stand out at a job fair, where employers may meet HUNDREDS of students and job seekers (hint: get them away from the standard script!):
    1. OFFER your help, rather than ASKING for stuff.
    2. Find out what their PAIN POINT IS, and figure out what in your skill set you can address this.
  • Every day is a HUSTLE for a small business. You are a liability for them. You need to show them that you’re an ASSET.

  2. Make something cool, like a graphic or video, and tweet it to them. Don’t be shy!
  3. Wait for their response.
